Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
