The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two established strikers - had netted just a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.
