Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing such drugs must be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like something activating and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural support.
