Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
